Despite the various challenges throughout the year like SARS and the war in Iraq, the 2nd
China Finance and Capital Markets Conference was successfully held in Shanghai and Beijing this November.
Like last year, the event was one of EuroEvents' signature event and it was well received with a great
range of speakers from China, Hong Kong and the United States.
The event was lively with the active participation of the audience and as expected, the issue of RMB
exchange rate was one of the highlights of this conference. The event kick-started with the keynote
speech of Dr. Ling Tao of the People Bank of China and his reviews on the monetary market and
the capital market gave the audience the insight of the development of the markets and the relationships
between the two. His idea was further reinforced by the keynote speech of the Beijing Session, at
which Mr. Dai Genyou of the People's Bank of China gave his views on the China Monetary policy.
Having been involved in the front line of setting monetary policy, Mr. Dai explained how the fundamental
stability of RMB Exchange Rate can be maintained. Mr. Jia Baobo of Shanghai Kinghing Investment
made a detailed comparison on the Pros and Cons of RMB appreciation and within his presentation, Mr. Jia
also highlighted the importance of a good timing should the appreciation is unavoidable.
Apart from the RMB outlook, the effect of QFII on the capital markets generated a lot of interest from
the audience after the wonderful speech of Dr. Gao Huiqing, the Division Chief of State Information
Center. In his presentation, QFII and the Development of the Securities Markets in China, he explained
why the China's capital market is unique in its development and why QFII is important for the next few
years.
Mr. Sam Pang of Fortis Bank gave the audience a very good introduction of Investment opportunities
in Interest Rate Derivatives and Structured Products. He highlighted the various nature of the product
and the common misunderstanding of the products because of a few high profile cases in the past few years.
Mr. Pang also highlighted on how the instruments should be used to find unusual investment opportunities.
Mr. Cedric Podevin and Ms. Jie Dong of BNP Paribas made two presentations on credit
derivatives and securitisations. In the presentation, Mr. Podevin introduced the concept and investment
opportunity of the product and Ms. Dong cited the Shinhan card as an example after outlining the
securitisation opportunities in China.
Mr. Zhao Ju, General Manager of China Galaxy Securities outlined the development, the process and
the challenges of bond offerings in China. With his vast amount of experience in this area, he highlighted
the difficulties when compared with the overseas markets.
Dr. Wang Hai Jun of China Cinda Asset Management Corporation gave a complete overview of the latest
development of China Cinda and the strategies in resolving the NPL problems.
Ms. Christina Lam, Chief Representative of Euroclear Bank gave a comprehensive overview of the
latest development of Euroclear and subsequently highlighted how STP can be achieved in Cross Border
Settlement using Euroclear's platform.
Mr. Francis Lee of FXCM Asia explained to the audience how and why the simple Forex trading has
recently received more attention from the banks and securities houses. In his presentation, Changing
Face of the FX markets, he outlined the recent development of the online FX trading platform and how
investors, including retails and institutional, can benefit from the much improved platform.
Dr. Warren Huang of OSA who has covered the asian markets for years explained to us how his
simulation model was able to value China Asset Prices including Equities, Bonds, Oil, Properties etc.
His unique approach has attracted a lot of questions from the audience.
Ms. Li Ya Min, Chief Analyst of Shenyin & Wenguo made a detailed analysis of the problems facing
by the state banks and their funding needs in order to meet the Capital Adequate Ratio (CAR) requirements
of WTO. The various ways to achieve the target were also discussed.
