Dr. Sammy Ho, Managing Director of Euro Events, welcomed all the delegates and
sponsors to the conference. Nearly 400 delegates packed the Westin Taipei
ballroom along with representatives from all the leading financial institutions,
regulators and of course the key companies.
Opening keynote address was carried by Mr. Richard Shih, Chairman of Taiwan
Futures Exchange; who highlighted the development of the Exchange and its future
plans for the years ahead.
Mr. John Duggan, Senior Vice President of the Singapore Exchange gave a very
special presentation on The Singapore Exchange's new product, DRAM Futures,
which will be launched in a few months time. Mr. Duggan gave a very
comprehensive overview of this new product and explained how it could help the
Taiwan Semiconductor manufacturers in tackling the issues of volatility of the
DRAM prices.
Ms. Christina Lam, Director and Chief Representative of Euroclear Bank outlined
today's settlement challenges to the audience and explained the trend by showing
the key statistics of the investment fund industry. The Fundsettle solution,
which helps to tackle the operational challenges of third party distribution,
was discussed.
Followed a coffee break, keynote address by Professor Norman Yin set the theme
for the session in which he shared with the audience his views on the
securitization market in Taiwan. He shared his optimism on the development so
far and he believes that there will be more cases to come. Of course, the first
securitization case of Taiwan was discussed in great details.
Professor Norman Yin's presentation was followed by a comprehensive review of
synthetic securitization by Mr. Kenneth Aboud and Chin-Chong Liew, partners of
Allen & Overy, in which the concept, the process and the various issues such as
legal, accounting etc. were discussed.
Mr. Thomas Chan, Vice President, ABN Amro highlighted ABN's experience in the
Asset Securitization market and explained to the crowd the process and benefits
by citing the Diner's Club's case as an example.

The afternoon session started with the Keynote speech from Dr. C. Chen of Taiwan
Ratings, who gave an overview on the developments of the financial holding
companies and the achievements and failures so far. He also provided a very
detailed explanation on the issue of cross sector risk within the financial
holding companies and how they should utilize their resources more effectively.
He indicated that companies must be cautious in their strategy if they are
considering in forming financial holding companies at this stage.
Mr. Albert Cobetto, chief executive officer of BondsInAsia provided an update on
the area of Regional Bond Markets. Mr. Cobetto explained the structure of
BondsInAsia in various countries and how their electronic trading platform BTX
has helped many customers to make more effective trading.
Ms. Sophia Cheng, Director, Equity Research of Merrill Lynch, gave a very
extensive overview of the financial industry, including banks and insurance
companies. She started off with an overview of the various key indicators such
as NPL ratio, interest rate trend etc. Then the financial landscape of Taiwan
was illustrated. She also highlighted the potentials and challenges of
Taiwanese banks in China.
Mr. Suresh Sankaran, Principal Advisor of IPS Sendero gave a very interesting
talk on credit risk modeling, which he skillfully explained to the audience the
concept of how to choose a credit risk model. More importantly he outlined how
financial institutions should prepare for Basel II by collecting the meaningful
data now.
